GODZILLA: KING OF COMICS!

by Mitz

Ladies and Gentlemen: Godzilla is back! It has been quite some time, but the King of Monsters has returned in a new publication released by IDW and Toho Co., Ltd. Godzilla: King of Monsters will be released beginning in March, and it will be written by Eric Powell (The Goon) and Tracy Marsh. Phil Hester (Of Kevin Smiths Green Hornet fame) will be bringing the Radioactive Lizard to life. Personally, Kevin Smith's Green Hornet is a favorite series of mine, and I love the artistic direction of that title. I'm excited to see how Hester will tackle the scale of such monstrous characters without making people seem too small. The series will be running two painted covers on a 50/50 distrubution: one by Eric Powell, done in a beautiful gatefold showing off Godzilla and his adversaries; and another by the renowned Alex Ross.

In Godzilla, the world is on the brink of an apocalypse. Giant monsters are on the assault, and there arent any capes to stop them. This is a tale of regular people trying to survive. A bit Cloverfield-esque? IDW promises you will see old and new monsters in this epic tale. The series also offers some new takes, along with more familiar approaches, on the Godzilla lore.

What I found to be the coolest thing about this series is the cover art. Expect great things from Powell and Ross. The Kicker: stores will be able to get a variant of their store being crushed by Godzilla!

GODZILLA: MONSTER WORLD #1 ($3.99, 32 pages, full color) will be available in comic stores in March 2011. Diamond order code JAN11 0463.

Why I Don't Do "Online Multiplayer"

by Mitz

Some call me crazy, others may even say Im a recluse, and surprisingly some people call me Shirley, but I do not like Online Multiplayer games. There is something I cant wrap my mind around when it comes to Online Multiplayer. Do other people feel the way I do? Its not possible that Im the only person who bucks this trend.

If I were to try and find a reason why I am the way I am, it would be best to start at the beginning of my gaming career: The core of the late 80s and early 90s. Mario, Sonic, Final Fantasy, and Shining Force were heavy on my systems rotation. There was a pattern to my gaming, and that common bond was simple: I like seeing a story unfold before me. Ive never owned a sports game until after college. When it came to multiplayer games, I was drawn to co-op/arcade style titles. Battle Toads, Bubble Bobble, Ninja Turtles, you name it. I never had the urge to compete against my friends; we started a quest together, and we were damn sure we would end it together.

A great schism occurred when SNES and Genesis were being replaced. Many of my friends went on to N64, and I had a Playstation. N64 had its flaws, but Golden Eye was a trump card. Droves of people still hail it as one of the greatest games ever, and its being re-released for the Wii. I couldnt cope with it. Everyone played the multiplayer mode, and I was baffled. In almost Grinch-esque questioning, I tried to rationalize why people shouldnt have fun playing it: They dont have a story, or even a plot; this killing has no purpose, what have the designers forgot? Yet, with out of the wonderful things absent that day, the gamers still played. I smugly told myself that Final Fantasy VII was better.

In high school, I took two things seriously: Acting and DD. Role-playing and playing roles both required a face-to-face interaction. For me, they are exhilarating. I was addicted to becoming the characters that others and I had created. The creative aspect of the human mind is a tool of unlimited power. Even though I tried, Blood Gulch could never compare. Killing everything that was wearing a different color than I was wearing did not appeal to me.

I guess thats how I got to be the anti-online gamer. For me, gaming is about bringing people together in one place to create something fun and entertaining. Whether its Rockband, Dungeons and Dragons, or just about any Wii game, you know Ill be down to waste some time with good friends. Like I said, youll never see me bunker down in my room and play an epic session of COD.

COMIC CON Spot Light: The Underburbs

by Mitz

With all the chaos at Nerd Blerp finally settling, it feels good to sit down and write about what I love: Comics.

At NYCC, I was able to walk around the Artist Gallery and meet some of the professionals in the field. I could go on forever about the cool stuff all the big publishers are doing now, but I would rather talk about the personal projects that some of the artists are working on. The first thing that really caught my eye as I walked in was:

THE UNDERBURBS

Story by T.J Dort and Joe Haley

Pencil and Ink by Joe Haley

Rolling Boil Press

To put it simply, I think this is the love child of The Nightmare Before Christmas and Invader Zim. Dort and Haley have dreamt up a whimsical yet comedically off-kilter world where monsters exist. The first issue focuses on the struggles of two characters: The Baroness, a teen vampire who plans to take over our world by turning all humans into her monster minions ; and Angela, the one person who seems to be concerned with being dominated by the Baroness.

The Baroness seems to have a very concrete plan:

1. Turn all humans into monsters

2. ???

3. BE THE EVIL QUEEN OF THE HUMAN WORLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Baroness seems to have step one down. She can turn all the humans she meets into the monster of which their clothing/ costume correlates to. After that, she really doesn't have that much control overanything.

It is a fun read, and offers laughs on every page.

Now you're asking, OH SNAP WHERE DO I GET ONE!? Fear not, there are many place to purchase The Underburbs:

1. Through Haley and Dort: The_Underburbs@yahoo.com Underburbs.deviantart.com

2. Comixspress (first issue only)

I highly suggest this series, so go out and buy it!

Mimobots: Designer USB Flash Drives

by Mitz

If there is one thing people love to do, its to collect things. People collect all sorts of random nonsense, so why not add something functional to the list? That is where Mimobots comes in: Designer USB Flash drives that are cute with a purpose.

Mimico, who has recently celebrated its five-year anniversary, created Mimobots. Based in Boston, the company found its start at San Diego Comic Con, where this year it re-released some of the original line of drives in new color schemes. In addition, the company released a new character to its core series, Dr. Knowledgeus.

Dear Micro$oft, Nerd Riots Might Ensue.

by Mitz

Over the past year, Microsoft has announced several changes to Xbox Live. If you have a gold subscription, expect tons of new goodies like ESPN and Hulu Plus. The flip side to all these new toys, is a higher cost of subscription for the Xbox Live service. The breakdown is as follows (in USD):

New Rates for Xbox Live Gold Subscription
Old Rate New Rate
One Month $7.99 $9.99
Three Months $19.99 $29.99
One Year $49.99 $59.99

Personally, I'm not that thrilled with the new rates. I don't think many people will be excited to pay more for the new features. The new rates begin on November first. Microsoft is rolling out an email to all current Gold Subscribers, allowing them to lock in a rate of $39.99 for their next one year subscription.

If You're Tired of the Usual Stuff You find on Chat Roulette

by Mitz

I'm letting you know ahead of time, this is a genital-free montage of Chat Roulette footage.  In honor of the release of The Last Exorcism, the film makers punk'd half the teen male population.  The film will be released on my birthday, August 27th.  This may or may not prove my connections to the Anti-Christ.  Enjoy the montage!

by Mitz

Internet memes come and go, but are never truly forgotten. This week I have written a haiku honoring one of these little chunks of internet comedy.

GOTHOPOTAMUS!

Fat men should NOT wear make up!

Lose weight, get a job.
