The Best Superheroes on Netflix!

by Staub

Netflix is a joy. No we dont receive any sort of kickback from the stream machine every time I say that. Its true though, Netflix is a wonderful addition to any PS3, 360, Wii, PC, Television, Roku, or iPad/Pod/Wad. I cant get enough of watching some excellent television (Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, orParks and Recreation) or great movies that I may have not seen yet. More recently, I have had the pleasure of helping my girlfriend get herself more into comic books. When a girl that you have very strong feelings for is headed down the right path and asks you for advice about The X-Men how could I not respond with, Sweetheart, I will show you the joys of the worldThrough NETFLIX!

Blog: My Day At New York Comic Con

by Staub

Sorry I haven't put this little blog up sooner. I was traveling for work the past week, and got stuck in hotels with questionable Wi-Fi. I really wanted to express my feelings about New York Comic Con 2011, and give you all a little slice of my day in the big city with all the costumed maniacs I call my brethren. Some may say those folks down at Wall Street are dedicated to their cause, but they havent seen that Bumble Bee costume in real life!

First Look At Bane!

by Staub

(yup...that's it)

Bane has had a less-than questionable movie history, with this awful portrayal in 1997's Batman and Robin. Did we ever expect to see this Luchador turned super-thug in another Batman film, let alone a Christopher Nolan Batman Film, probably not. We know that Tom Hardy (Inception, Bronson) is going to bring the Bat-breaking powerhouse back to the silver screen in The Dark Knight Rises. But what will this new Bane look like?

7 New Rules for Superhero Flicks

by graves

For the past decade or so, Super heroes have all but dominated the multiplexes and it doesn't look like they're showing any signs of slowing down. Truthfully, this makes me pretty damn happy. As a life long comic book geek, it's great to see some of my favorite characters being brought to life on the big screen, especially when it comes to the more obscure ones. I mean, if someone had told you 15 years ago that a Thor movies was in the works, you probably would have laughed your head off and slapped them silly. Today it's the exact opposite; we're not even surprised by rumors of an Ant Man movie. And this summer, it seems the super heroes are going to be busier than ever with no less than four blockbusters hitting the cinemas in the coming months. It's a good time to be a nerd, but it's also a good time to pause and think about the implications of this. We already know that they're rebooting Superman, Spider-Man, Daredevil, and Fantastic Four, not to mention some tiny movie called The Avengers (written and directed by some weirdo named Joss Whedon) and all these films are starting to make me a little nervous. The Superhero films have begun to follow a steady formula and I've started to notice that many of them are succumbing to the same annoying trends and tired cliches. So, with super heroes' best interests at heart, I have come up with a list of rules that all future super hero flicks should follow in order to stay relevant, engaging and fresh.

Comic Coma: Spider-Man and Future Foundation

by Staub

It feels good to be back! As I said last time, I feel as though my love for comic books and comic book heroes has been rejuvenated by some of the more recent events in glossy paper. After venturing to my local comic shop,Blu Planetfor some much needed Magic: The Gathering cards. I became instantly infatuated with comics again. I felt as though I was leaving my Comic Coma (hence the title). However, I can no longer be as diligent a reader. Student Loans, and credit cards make it pretty difficult to keep up with everything. So I chose one book to stick with, Future Foundation (FF), I have also decided to re-establish my connection with the Web Head. So this past week on my lovely vacation to Florida, I spent some time with some older Spidey stories and the newest issue of FF.

Jack of Fables Hits The Road!

by graves

Last week, Vertigos long running and surprisingly popular spin-off series, Jack of Fables came to an end at 50 issues. Not too shabby for a series that seemed doomed from the start. I remember shaking my head in incredulity when I first heard about the idea for this spin-off of Fables. Jack Horner carrying a book all by himself? That unrepentant rogue whose only interests were money and pussy? I mean sure, the guy was good for an occasional laugh or two, but beyond that he was just so one-note! What were Bill Willingham and Matt Sturges going to do with him? Were they going to change him into a hero? I picked up the first few issues warily and was very pleased (and shocked) to learn that Bill and Matt had no interest in making Jack into a hero. In fact, it was the exact opposite; they made him viler than he already was! They made him so bad that you couldnt even call him an anti-hero. Anti-heroes may be cruel, deranged or even cold-blooded murderers, but you still wind up rooting for them. Not so with Jack; he constantly broke the fourth wall to tell you, the reader, what a loser you were for reading his adventures, he was never even remotely invested in any of his major storylines, he never saved anybody or helped anybody unless he could get money out of it, and he even insulted his own artists! Youd think that this would have made the book difficult to read but Jack of Fables turned out to be one of the funniest, craziest and most irreverent books on the stands. Ive never read anything quite like it. From Jack Horner and his unreliable attitude to his wonderful sidekick, Gary (AKA The Pathetic Fallacy) to his ludicrous villains known as The Literals, Jack of Fables provided comic fans with a series so whacked out of its mind that I eventually began to crave it more than Fables. So, here I am to give the series its final salute. Well go over the best characters, best single issue and series highpoints. I could trash lots of things about this series, but am in no mood (for once) to hate on things. Ill also try to discuss the final issue without giving too much away.

St Patrick's Day Special: The Best of the Irish!

by Staub

Erin go Bragh! It's Saint Patrick's Day. A day set aside for being loud, drunk, and irritable. We love St. Paddy's day in America, because it's a day where we all get to celebrate having a grand ol' time. Now, is St. Patrick's Day celebrated in Ireland? Not really to the extent of the American holiday, but hey, we're Americans and we always need an excuse to party!

With my Half Irish descent, I've always embraced St. Paddy's day like the rest of Americans. Eat some crummy food, listen to some Irish music, and maybe...just maybe...fight someone. It's great! This year at The Blerp, I wanted to celebrate my favorite Irish music, characters, and celebrities. Irish Americans are okay too! Why? Because, that's what we do here!

World Premiere of All Star Superman!

by Grizz

On Monday night, Nerd Blerp was in attendance at the World Premiere of DC's new animated film, All Star Superman. Taking place at the Paley Center for Media in NY, the movie is an adaptation of the Grant Morrison/Frank Quitely/Jamie Grant miniseries, which puts Superman depicts a different version of Supes' as an amalgamation of his many appearances throughout his long history.

The film was screened to a crowd of avid fans as well as the writer Dwayne McDuffie, voice director Andrea Romano, and actress Christina Hendricks (Mad Men, Firefly) and her husband Geoffrey Arend (Devil, 500 Days of Summer) and several other industry Warner Brothers and DC industry folk who I couldnt the names of.

While I have not had the pleasure of reading the comic series that the film was based on, I certainly purchased both volumes of the trade paperback the minute I got home from the premiere. For those who may not be familiar with the comic, be warned: like DC's other animated films of recent, this film is completely, unapologetically, and blissfully comic-book-Superman. There is little to no pandering towards people unfamiliar with the monthly-issued world of aliens, monsters, and subterranean reptile people battling caped crime fighters.

Spider-Man the Musical News: An Interview with Norman Osborn

by Huey

Many of our readers have probably heard something about the seemingly doomed Spider-Man musical being produced on Broadway by U2s Bono and The Edge, and visionary director Julie Taymor. Amid numerous accidents (involving actors, stunt workers, and technicians), the show has been forced to delay its opening until February 7, 2011. This marks the fourth major delay in production since the show was slated to premiere in the fall of 2010.

The most recent setback came when stuntman and actor Christopher Tierney fell 30 feet from a harness that was meant to keep him suspended mid-air during the shows final scene. Though his injuries were not serious, the fall badly frightened cast and audience members and caused the actress playing Mary Jane to burst into hysterics.

Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, which will go on record as the most expensive musical ever produced on Broadway, has been a prime target for critics, comedians, and New Yorks theater elite. If the show doesnt clean up its act, it will suffer an irreparable loss of integrity, and may prove the most costly mistake in the history of the American stage.

Thankfully, researchers here at Nerd Blerp.com have gotten to the root of the problem. In an astounding turn of events, our crack team of journalists have obtained an exclusive interview with the man claiming to be the mastermind behind the ruination of this highly anticipated super-musical. Thats right, boys and girls. Nerd Blerp.coms own Huey has obtained an interview with Norman Osborn.
